Jackpot?

There are a few games I’ve been wanting to own for a long while now but haven’t gone out of my way to find.  Most of them are rarer and don’t come up often in the flesh, and others are much more common but are heinously expensive.  When I’ve seen the more common ones at swaps or on the local classifieds site, I can’t really justify dishing out so much money for one game and often get blown off while trying to haggle.  I’ve always put buying these games off in hopes of finding them for $2 at a yard sale or something, but so far no good!  This is why I’m a big fan of package deals when possible.  Sometimes things work out pretty nicely for me when everything comes out of the woodwork at the same time.  Last weekend was one of those times.

We travelled to a nearby town since we had some good driving weather and did our usual rounds at the usual shops we like to go to.  We were met by empty shelves at the thrift stores and ignorance at some other pawn shops.  Just as my faith in mankind was waning, my boyfriend reminded me of my new favourite store in that city – I had almost forgotten about this awesome store that deals in all forms of geekery and has recently taken the plunge into wheeling and dealing retro video games.  We arrived and after making nice with the store owner, I found myself totally blown away by the fact that three games I’d been searching for were all in the same place at the same time, and in beautiful shape.

The first was Chrono Trigger.  This is my common but heinously expensive game that I’ve been wanting to buy on the SNES since practically forever ago.  The other thing is that I’ve already played it on the Final Fantasy Chronicles compilation for PS1, but the load times between battles were painfully slow.  They were so slow in fact that it really took away from my experience playing it, and that’s really the main reason why I’ve never started a new game plus.  This is not an issue on the SNES version at all.  In the past year or so, I haven’t seen the SNES version anywhere below $180, and hell if I was going to pay that much for it!  The shop vendor had the game marked at $180, but it came with a custom plastic case.  To me, I could’ve taken or left the case, but I couldn’t get away from the flawless condition.  I started my game pile with that one and continued shopping.  Behold its loveliness!  The label is a tiny bit crooked, but it’s in immaculate shape.

A rare game I’ve wanted to pick up for eventual perusal is Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber.  This game is one that I’ve never actually seen in person at a swap or at a store, and it was also more exciting for me since I had already purchased its predecessor on the SNES – Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen – this past summer.  The game was published by Atlus, a company notorious for having small release numbers for many of their games.  Like Chrono Trigger above, the condition of the game was near flawless so I scooped it up as well.  I’m really interested in trying out some tactical RPGs, and from what I’ve read and watched about Ogre Battle 64, it’s one of the very best of the genre, if at not least one of the very best games for the N64.

20170226_112342.jpg

One of the games I was very excited to see in person was Super Adventure Island II for the SNES.  I’m not very quiet about how much I love the Adventure Island series!  When I picked up Super Adventure Island (also for SNES) this past summer, I felt a little disappointed.  The game was really short and paled in comparison to my favourite of the series, Adventure Island II on the NES.  Although it was true to many of the themes in previous games in the series, it stood out for all the wrong reasons with the exception of its phenomenal soundtrack.  I had heard about Super Adventure Island II and how it diverged from the usual “find fruit and kill things” formula.  It was supposed to be more akin to games like Metroid where you had to discover new skills and abilities to move forward in areas you couldn’t get to or through before.  There are also many RPG elements in the game including a weapons and armour system, currency, and magic!  I don’t know how an Adventure Island game had managed to converge with my favourite genre, but it did.  And it was there in front of my very face in the store, again in the best condition I’ve ever seen it.  It might as well have been sparkling under a spotlight with many angels singing, or something similarly cliche.  I added it to my game pile as well.

20170226_112302.jpg

The other two games I picked up were for disc-based consoles, namely Playstation and Playstation 2.  I found Alundra 2 there, as well as Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.  I own Alundra and recently bought a reproduction cartridge of Star Ocean for SNES, so these two games made a lot of sense to buy.  Alundra 2 came complete while the Star Ocean game was missing its manual.  I was a little freaked out after getting home when I noticed that Star Ocean was the French version (it said so quietly on the back instead of plainly on the front where it should’ve been stated.)  I don’t speak French and was hoping that it wasn’t a French language version of the game, and thankfully it wasn’t!  I dodged a bullet there!  I honestly don’t know what’s so French about it, but I’m guessing there’s some option somewhere inside to change the language.

20170226_112053.jpg20170226_112214.jpg

I’m loving the hint line numbers in the CD case for Alundra 2.  It’s hard to see in the photo, but it’s $0.99 US/min and $1.49/min in Canada.  I guess our dollar has always been garbage!

The last thing we found was my boyfriend’s pick, a Sega Genesis game called Flashback: The Quest for Identity. This was a game that neither of us had heard of but decided to bite the bullet on because of the awesome price.  When we got home and I sat down to test out the game, I was shocked and appalled to see that it was made with the engine for Prince of Persia, one of my personal most-hated games of all time.  I won’t get into why I despise Prince of Persia so much for the moment, but I can say in testing Flashback, it brought all my feelings of rage and frustration back in a few moments of trying to maneuver the main character through the stage.  The box and game were in good shape, so I certainly can’t complain.

20170226_112517.jpg

After seeing my giant pile building up, I was a little worried about the bottom line for all these wonderful games.  After some haggling, I ended up paying $400 for everything.  If your jaw has hit the floor, mine is down there with yours too.  Though I didn’t get anywhere near a screamin’ deal for everything here, I did get below what I’d normally pay at a swap or online, and I had been squirreling away money all winter long for an occasion such as this.  The store itself is also a local business that has been a part of the city for at least 30 years, so it feels better supporting them than it does slimy hock/pawn shop dealers trying to flip games so fast it makes your head spin.  There are definitely some great games here, and I’m looking forward to taking some of them for a spin in the future.

Here’s a nice family photo of all the games together.  You can also see the Chrono Trigger custom case if you were wondering what it was all about.

In other excellent news, we have finally ordered a piece of adult furniture for our Nerd Room to replace the awful Walmart shelf that has been housing our games for the past year or so.  We have a true hardwood shelf on its way which will be much more long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing.  Our current shelf is warped and bowed and comes apart in two pieces if you lift from the top (I assure you it’s not supposed to!) so it will be going on a permanent vacation to the sitting room with all my books that currently take up shelf space in the Nerd Room.  Gaaaaaames.

I also wanted to thank The Shameful Narcissist and AmbiGaming for the wonderful blog award nominations.  I haven’t forgotten.  I’m just horribly bad at keeping up with writing with work in full swing and other ongoing projects.  I promise to get a post out soonish!

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend.  I have more things to post about and hope to get writing about them all in the next week or so!

Thanks for reading,

-GG

  1. I think I tried out Star Ocean on the PS 2 but just couldn’t get into it. Flashback though! That was one of my first PC games (it’s a nightmare to play on keyboard) so I have some fond memories there. It’s damn hard though!
You found some top stuff there and it all looks in great shape!

Thank you! I love when I find things in good condition that are not two arms and a leg to afford. One arm and a leg I can handle, especially if they’re on the rarer side.

Flashback, eh? Maybe I will have to give it a try. I played Prince of Persia on a keyboard as well, so maybe that was part of the problem? I just remember hating the controls, constantly falling into spikes and not ever seeming to know where to go. I was younger than 10, though.

      • Oh, Flashback is a pain in the backside regardless. If you didn’t like Prince of Persia, you won’t enjoy this. The style of gameplay hasn’t aged well at all.

Some great finds there – nice variety of genres too. You really should force yourself to play Flashback you know. When it finally clicks, you’ll love it! Truly one of the best games of its time.

Thanks! If you think it’s worth it to play Flashback, maybe I will give it a go sometime. I had never heard of it at all before last weekend, but it seems to be well-loved here. That’s certainly something!

Wow. That is an incredible set of games. I’m lucky enough to own Ogre Battle 64 (if only I still had the box!) that I bought brand new and it was a very good game for the time. The one thing is that the characters move around the map incredibly slowly so you will need to be patient while playing. I remember even back then thinking the game was comically slow paced and I was probably in middle school at the time. I do hope you enjoy it and if nothing else, I don’t think Ogre Battle 64’s value will be going down anytime soon. Congratulations and your retro finds are inspiring as always!

Thanks 😀 I think I remember you telling me about your copy of Ogre Battle 64 before and I’ve been excited to find my own ever since. I haven’t heard at all that the pacing was slow, so that’s a good thing I’ll keep in mind when I play it. Thanks for your kind words. Finding these games all in one place for an okay price was a great experience!

As soon as you mentioned that, I remembered our conversation and I’m glad I at least added something new to it haha! The one thing I will add is that Ogre Battle had a pretty decent story as I recall so that makes the waiting around worth it. I would definitely love to hear your thoughts on the game whenever you get around to playing it!

Flashback is a great game. It takes a lot of influence from Eric Chahi’s Another World(Out Of This World in North America). You play a cop with amnesia, who has to figure out who he is, and then track down criminals. It’s very long, very difficult. But fun.

I see you nabbed Super Adventure Island III. I only ever played it once. Rented it from Blockbuster back in the day. Super fun game. Never saw it again.

The other rares are great finds. A lot of shmups are getting rare these days. If you find Power Strike, Power Strike 2 (Master System) M.U.S.H.A (Genesis) Space MegaForce (Super NES) ROBO ALESTE (SEGA CD) you’ll have some of the key games, and tie-ins in the Aleste series. All of which command high prices. Shmups in general are getting some attention in the collector’s market.

With all of the love I’m hearing for Flashback here, I think I’m stuck giving it a try at some point. I will have to put my Prince of Persia feelings aside, I guess.

I really wish I liked shmups more. I tried Gradius recently and was just terrible at it. From the ones you mentioned there, the only one I’ve heard of is M.U.S.H.A. since I have Crusader of Centy, which is similar in rarity level. I’ve often seen the two games at the top of rare Genesis lists and have looked into what it was all about at some point. Either way, I will keep my ear to the ground for some of those!

Oh wow! It’s like the Triforce of awesome games was united at that shop. I can’t believe what stunning condition those cartridges are in. Very nice haul! Je ne parle pas francais either 🙂

Oh and I finished your entertaining Miracle Warriors LP the other day. I learned so much and I’m glad I got to witness the game (I totally agree with your thoughts on the cute and interesting enemy sprites). I doubt I’d personally have the patience to playthrough it, haha.

Thank you, thank you. I’m pretty sure I was like a small child in a candy shop with my gasps and coos whenever I saw these and several other games I wanted. I would’ve bought everything I wanted there, but I couldn’t justify spending more that day. There’s always next time!

I’m so glad you thought the Miracle Warriors LP was entertaining! I’m not a person who tries extra hard to be funny or is particularly good at commentating on things after doing them a million times (i.e. the Liphant forest), so I’m glad it wasn’t super boring after a while. I’d honestly play the game again sometime even though I just played it twice. It’s a special kind of challenge and different enough from other turn-based RPGs that it felt fresh somehow. I can understand why you wouldn’t want to play it though… it’s tedious at times. For me personally, I like the triumphant feeling of finishing a game like that, which is why I’m crazy enough to keep playing others like it!

Wow, it was a great day! Among all the games you got I absolutely love Flashback! A bit of Prince of Persia and a bit of Another World (a.k.a. Out of this World). One of the greatest games of its genre ever!

  7. Awesome finds! I’m happy you found some great stuff! I’ve always wanted Chrono Trigger too. A friend of mine had it when we were kids, and I’m pretty sure he sold it for like $5 when he was done playing it! 😦

  8. While my jaw was a bit on the floor, I do have to say that you got a magnificent haul. Chrono Trigger on cartridge is like finding a unicorn! Cartridge games in general are difficult to find and ridiculously expensive at that. I wish I still had my Final Fantasy VI, which was Final Fantasy III on it’s SNES cartridge, because it would be worth quite a pretty penny. I do have the Final Fantasy Chronicles version of CC (the one for PS), but I haven’t noticed an issue with loading times. It’s been a while since I’ve played though so I may notice it next time lol. Star Ocean has been on my backlog list for a while. I hope you enjoy all of your haul!

Thank you! Sometimes I just get caught up in the moment and my money parts with me a little too easily. I wouldn’t have been able to sleep for weeks if I hadn’t taken the plunge though. It’s just how I am!

My copy of FFIII on SNES is a little beat up, but I got my copy for $40 a few years ago. I still haven’t played it yet. I’m half debating doing a SNES RPG run after I finish up with my SMS games since I’ve got so many cartridges now! I’m really only missing Breath of Fire II, Secret of Evermore, Brainlord, and a few others.

When I played FFIV on FF Chronicles, I didn’t notice any lag. Only during Chrono Trigger! Maybe I’ll have to make a little video to show what I mean. It’s at least a few seconds where all the characters freeze after a battle before they can move again!

      • You would’ve regretting it so much if you hadn’t! And since you’d been stockpiling money for it, I think you made the right move.

Wow! Last time I checked Amazon it was in the $200 range, but then I think sellers on there know they can price it that high and people will buy it. You should totally do an SNES RPG run!! Lightning and I were talking about you a bit :p We were saying how since you’re the Zelda queen you could do an LP of Breath of the Wild and we’d definitely watch it. I was thinking about it because the other Zelda LPer I watch has started one, but I’m backlogged with LPs, too. I’m watching ME3 and your Ys. Then I need to watch another friend’s ME and then I can possibly watch BOTW.

I know what you’re talking about now with Chrono Trigger. I noticed that, too, but I think I thought it was normal because I want to say that was the first way I’d played the game. I don’t think I ever played it on the original SNES. That would be annoying if I were used to the cartridge.

Hahaha I am no Zelda queen! You guys are hilarious 😛 I’ve been playing through Breath of the Wild a bit and am finding it to be a lot of fun so far. I’ll have to play through a lot of it before I consider LPing it though, and that might take me a while! I’m glad to know there’d be an appetite for it!

You’ve got a lot of watching to be doing! I’ve started recording my Phantasy Star LP as well between bouts of work and editing more Ys. It’s a busy hobby, but I love it!

      • Bah, don’t be so modest! I’m now considering BOTW as a playthrough due to a review I read. I know I’m going to be terrible at it, since I’m much better at watching Zelda than playing, but everything I’m hearing talks about how amazing it is to play. Not that I need an excuse to want a Wii U or a Switch.

I can’t imagine how time consuming editing videos is. I’ll find out soon enough I suppose hehe. Phantasy Star is another one on my backlog!

Well, thank you. I’m decently good at games I played to death as a kid, but as I’m finding out with BoTW, not so much! I die a lot because I’m struggling with the controls. There are so many buttons that all do different things, so I’m spending time thinking of how to get my weapon out, or how to get my shield out.

Editing videos is what you make it. If I have a good run where I don’t have to do much grinding and edit it out, it’s not too bad. I only use Windows Movie Maker… no fancy software. It’s bare bones, but it gets the job done!

      • I use WMM, too haha. I use it for making slideshows, and I know you can make AMVs on it, too (that’s my next level of projects). I didn’t even consider you could use it for editing LPs but why not? I just added a video capture device to my Amazon wish list. I’m slowly figuring out what I need. I still think I want my first game to be FFIV, because I really want to incite the let’s player’s curse and die a hell of a lot lol.

      • Oooh, I definitely have questions! Off the top of my head, I’m curious how I’d go about recording for older systems. The piece of equipment I found is for the PS3 and above era, but I’d like to have something that can capture on the PS2 and potentially even a handheld system. I appreciate your offer! I may bug Athene of AmbiGaming, too since she’s where I got the info on what video capture device to look at 🙂

I use an Elgato game capture device, and a signal splitter. Usually the output from older consoles is composite video, and you can buy a splitter to send the signal to your television and to your capture device at the same time. You can also get a different type of capture card that receives composite video signals and has USB on the other end to send a signal directly into your computer as well. I used to have one that was Roxio brand.

For the handhelds, it gets a bit more complicated. Some of them have to be modified because there’s no signal output (DS, for example), but things like the PSP I think have an audio/video output that could go to a computer.

Hope this helps! I can take photos later if that’ll be useful.

I love love love Ogre Battle 64! I have very fond memories playing it as a child and have considered repurchasing the game ever since it came out on Wii U VC a couple of weeks ago. Chrono Trigger and Super Adventure Island II are also top-notch SNES games, but man, do I love Ogre Battle 64. It was my introduction to strategy games, and I was hooked for months. As always, thank you for sharing your pictures! Always so happy for you for finding amazing things!

Yay! I’m glad that there are people out there that love Ogre Battle 64 as much as I’m hoping I will! I have no experience at all with tactical or strategy RPGs, so it’ll be a totally new experience for me. I’ve got other games like FF Tactics as well as a few others hanging around, and I’m constantly wondering which one of them I should be starting out with. Glad to hear so much love 🙂 I’m really surprised that I keep tending to find games right as they’re being released on the virtual console. This happened recently with something else cool that I found, and I can’t remember what it was now.

Glad to know that you think that Super Adventure Island II and Chrono Trigger are top-notch. You generally have an excellent taste in games!

Aw thank you! I appreciate that sentiment! Ogre Battle 64 was an enlightening game for me, and its real-time strategy may be confusing at first, but it really hooked me when I first played it years ago. Super Adventure Island II is my favorite in the entire series due to its more Metroid-like level design and upgrade system. It’s much more sophisticated than the island man on the front would make you think. And Chrono Trigger is an absolute classic as far as RPGs and time-related science fiction stories are concerned! Enjoy your new games! 🙂
