Hungry Goriya Used Acquire: Nintendo Wii

This is the fourteenth post in a series called “Hungry Goriya Used Acquire” that serves to highlight the contents of a large game collection I procured from an old high school friend of mine, Joe.  Read here for the backstory.

The Wii was a console I waited several years after its release to buy.  Though I waited for a sale, I ended up caving at the last minute and bought the more expensive black version of it.  I had a fairly tiny collection of games for the Wii, mostly consisting of the titles you’d expect from the main Nintendo franchises, with the star of my collection being The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.  There are a few games I’ve been wanting to pick up and actually have lately, but Joe’s collection helped to expand that collection a little further and netted me some new games I never knew I needed.

Before we get to the games, I want to show you the boxed console.  Most of you folks around my age have likely seen this box plenty at the stores, so it’s nothing particularly special, but it is in very good shape.  You can see that I didn’t take the console out of the box because packing it back in there is an absolute nightmare.  In addition to the boxed console, we also received the Wii Zapper, which is really just a plastic holder for the Wii-mote that happens to come with Link’s Crossbow Training.  The copy of the game was still sealed, so that was a nice touch as well.  I don’t know if any of you have played Skyward Sword or Ocarina of Time, but anything that involves aiming and shooting at targets (rupees, pumpkins, or whatever) makes my blood boil.  I can’t tell you how long I spent at the shooting gallery in Ocarina of Time listening to that music over and over and over again… needless to say, I don’t think I’ll be jumping into Link’s Crossbow Training any time soon.

I was happy to see a USB wi-fi connector for the Wii.  Having wireless internet connectivity will be better than the previous setup involving many long network extension cables running throughout the house.  I never knew these existed.

Because my friend couldn’t seem to get enough of Guitar Hero, we also got two boxed versions of the games released on the Wii: Aerosmith, and Legends of Rock.  Both boxes came with all the listed assets, and everything was in pretty good shape and working well.  I think along with the other Guitar Hero stuff we got for the Xbox 360 and the Rockband stuff, we’re up to 5 guitars!  That’s a lot of storage for something I don’t think I’ll play very much.

There were a small pile of games to be had apart from these big, bulky Guitar Hero boxes.  I think what’s surprising to me about these first seven is just how much blood, guts, death, and surgical precision surgical prowess these games all seem to be focused around.  Between Mr. Chainsaw-For-Arm and Mr. Lightsaber-Lite, these games are jam-packed with gore and murder.  Don’t even get me started on all of the undead re-killing that probably happens in Resident Evil 4 and The House of the Dead.  Trauma Center: Second Opinion looks interesting to me, but I watched a video about it and it gave me the willies.  Though the graphics aren’t entirely realistic, the idea of suturing and pulling giant shards of glass and other debris out of people ushers me close to a state of vasovagal syncope.  The most fun I had in a hack-n-slash was definitely Diablo II, so maybe these games might bring me back to that in some way.

The second bunch of games we received are on the much lighter side of things.  I’ve never owned a copy of Wii Play, but I do recall playing the cow racing game with a friend back in university and loving that so much.  What I was especially excited about here were the Metroid games, especially the Metroid Prime Trilogy!  I’ve heard that the games are not to be missed.  Given I have never played a single Metroid game, now feels like a good time to start.

Though they’re just a humble set of games and accessories compared to the enormity of what we got for other consoles in this acquisition, these Wii additions are still some great staples!  I have a Wii U, so it’ll be nice to experience many of these games in a higher resolution.
