The Springtime Shuffle

I can honestly say that this has been one of the slowest winters for game collecting I’ve ever experienced.  With the exception of a few things wiggling into my possession by chance, I’ve mostly been shopping online or at game stores.  In my downtime, I’ve had some time to work on other projects like Let’s Plays and other videos I’ve been wanting to put together over on my YouTube channel, but for the most part, things out my way have been pretty quiet.

The first thing I picked up was Sonic the Hedgehog for Game Gear.  Before buying this Sonic game, my boyfriend only owned the second one.  This was at the thrift store for $3, so it was not a tough sell.

I also recently discovered some RPGs for the Game Gear, and according to some ancient forums I stumbled across, some are better than others to try out.  I picked up Defenders of Oasis and Crystal Warriors for a total of $50.  There are some other Game Gear games I’d like to pick up too, but the one I’d like most is Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya.  I’d also absolutely love to play Sylvan Tale, but it was a Japan exclusive.  After watching some gameplay I’ve been pining after that one pretty hard, I’m going to have to find a way to play a translated version.  It looks too cute and awesome to pass up.

Another game I bought was Athena for NES.  I heard about the game in a video somewhere and was pleased with how much the game visually reminded me of Alex Kidd.  I haven’t made it too far yet, mostly because I have been having a difficult time getting the cartridge to work!  It is one of the finickiest games I own and will only start up once out of 30 tries or so.  I’ve cleaned it and opened it up to inspect it and everything looks fine, so I’m not too sure what the issue is.

Staying on the NES track, I picked up a long-sought-after game.  Ghost Lion was available at a game store with its box, manual and poster.  I had first tried this game out years ago on the DS using an R4 card, and I played it for quite some time.  At some point I had stupidly overwritten my save state and gave up, but the game was stuck in my head.  I decided to bite the bullet at my friend’s store and I paid about $140 for the game in its pristine condition.  It might seem like a lot, but because I’ve barely bought anything all winter, I wasn’t too upset about paying it and supporting a friend.  This game is in the best condition of any boxed game I own for the NES.  I almost hate putting the cartridge into the console because the game’s sticker is literally perfect.  It’s a good thing I collect to play.  Games were meant to be played!

Although I don’t run across Famicom games in the wild very often, I did find two in a thrift store recently and bought both for $20 total.  The games were Duck Tales and Rockman 3 (aka Mega Man 3).  I didn’t have a North American version of Duck Tales, so I was pretty happy to find that one.  Thankfully there’s not a lot of story and reading required to play, and some of the main assets on the game screen are in English!  I think I would’ve normally passed on Rockman 3 since I already own it for NES, but for $20 combined, who could really complain?

This also encouraged my boyfriend to fix our game converter that allows us to play Famicom games on the NES.  We bought it a long while ago and it has never worked.  He took it apart and diagnosed it using a continuity test.  It turned out that there were 8 broken traces.  With his ever-improving soldering skills, he rigged up some jumpers and got it working without much trouble.  Needless to say, I can now enjoy these games!

Here’s a photo of some of the broken traces pre-fix.  My boyfriend removed the silk screening to repair them.  Though the breaks were not always explicitly visible (most obvious is the leftmost one), the continuity test revealed the issues.

Moving into 16-bit territory now, I also picked up a copy of Equinox for the SNES.  This is the sequel to Solstice, a puzzle game for NES that I’ve played a bit with a friend.  To be quite honest, I had mistaken this game for an RPG based on its label sticker, but I am happy with the purchase regardless.  This game is highly praised for fun gameplay and great music.  It’ll be a nice break from RPGs when I get around to it.  This game also came from the game store for $25.

Just a few days ago, I finally decided to answer a classifieds ad that had been up for about a month.  There was a person selling a bunch of random games and gaming-related items like the Intellivoice module, which we already have.  I did see a Pokemon Gold Game Boy in the mix along with a few Game Boy games, so I messaged the seller and we agreed on a time to meet.  With my boyfriend along for the ride as usual, we ended up getting the Game Boy, a GB game called Kwirk that I hadn’t heard of before and a Colecovision game called Miner 2049er.  At a quick glance, I couldn’t tell if Miner 2049er was for Atari or not, so I gambled and lost: turns out it’s for Colecovision, and we don’t have a Coleco console at the moment.  The Game Boy was also missing its battery back, but it’s in great working condition minus a few scratches on the screen. We got everything in the photo below for $10.

Kwirk has also turned out to be a pleasant little puzzle game.  The music in it is pretty great and I’m constantly impressed by music I’m discovering for Game Boy games.  I uploaded some music from Faceball 2000 recently and I can’t quite get enough of that song.  I might have to add some Kwirk music to that playlist since there are currently only two songs in there.  There needs to be more!

The other thing I was hoping to get my hands on was a copy of Mega Man V for Game Boy.  I saw that pop up at the thrift store last week, but I was shocked and mostly appalled at the staggering price tag of $114.99 for the cartridge alone.  Where I live in Canada, there’s a 13% sales tax, so all in, the game would be close to $130 Canadian all said and done.  That’s ludicrous for a game being sold at a thrift store, especially since the store pays for their donations by weight.  I think we all know that a Game Boy game doesn’t come anywhere near that price because of its enormity.  People there have been getting greedier and greedier.

A picture of the game being held captive in the showcase.

After whining to a few store employees about the skyrocketing prices on games, someone handed me a Friends and Family discount flyer which allows for discounts on store items.  Video games have a 50% discount so I’m going to try my luck and see how things pan out when the sale rolls around.  I’m still not sure I even want to buy it at half off if the greed is running so rampant in that store, but I’ll see how I feel at that point if it’s even still there.  I’d mostly be buying it to play it for myself and then maybe sell it or trade it for something else.  We’ll see!

Here’s hoping that more games will start finding their way into my hands soon!  There are a few swaps lined up for April and May, so I plan to get out to those.  Yard sale-ing should also start up as soon as the rest of this snow melts, but the defrosting has been slow-going this Spring.  Anyway, I hope you’ve all been having a pleasant weekend!

Thanks for reading!

Yay! I was waiting so bad for a new post from you! I absolutely share your point of view on Athena. I have a copy of the game as well (the 5 screw cartridge) and it’s the only NES game I own I haven’t still fired up because it’s impossible for my console to read it. At this point I start to think that is a problem of the game itself! Even the Famicom games look interesting especially Duck Tales which is one of my favourite on the NES. I would really like to collect old consoles of the 2nd generation like the ColecoVision and the IntelliVision but (especially the former) are quite pricey, but your post give me the small kick in the arse I needed to try to find them. Actually I should probably submit a question about the IntelliVision taking advantage of your great knowledge in old games but first I want to be sure to get some games 🙂

Hmmm maybe it is a problem with the games! That’s good to know because I felt pretty crazy and thought something was wrong enough that I almost contacted the seller and complained! I was really, really excited to find Duck Tales. I’ve always wanted to play it but the North American version is expensive (don’t even get me started on Duck Tales 2!) I hope you can find some ColecoVision and IntelliVision out your way. I have never seen them out and about and happened to chance upon my IntelliVision from someone selling their collection a few years ago. If you’re patient, I’m sure one will come your way in no time!

I didn’t know DuckTales were so expensive in the US. DuckTales 2 is one of those games that people know is a bit rare so online demand very high prices but a loose PAL version can be bought for 20-25€ if you’re patient…

I actually ended up playing the Game Gear edition of Sonic 1 before I tried out the Genesis version. There’s little question that the Genesis version is better, but the Game Gear/Master System one was a solid platformer for its time.

I wish I had the opportunity to play the Game Gear games first! I have a hard time even going back to Sonic 1 from Sonic 2 sometimes because Sonic 2 fixed a few things that I didn’t really like in the first game. I’m curious to try out the Game Gear games simply because they’re a completely different set of Sonic adventures than what I’ve played before!

I’m in the same boat as Red, we had a GG before the MD so that’s the version of Sonic I played first – some good memories there! 😁 (I actually wrote about it a little while ago). It’s pretty different and they made a good attempt at mixing up the levels to get the best out of Sega’s handheld.

… Also what… What is “Ghost Lion”???

Awww man, I must’ve missed that post! I’m going to have to go back and find it now.

Ghost Lion is a fabulous RPG for the NES. You play as Maria, a girl trying to find her parents (I think?) after the evil Ghost Lion ravages your village. You get to recruit different spirits to help your battle, and each spirit is like a summon in other games that has a special move set. You can fight enemies with them! It’s a pretty different idea for an RPG from that era, and I just loved it when I tried it.

Ghost Lion does sound cool… I know soooo little about NES games. For some reason I’d imagined some kind of “Altered Beast” type arrangement where you could transform into the Ghost Lion… All to some kind of 8-bit rock soundtrack… Sometimes my imagination gets away from me…

The game you’ve described here sounds pretty cool though… I would go for some Ghost Lion action, terrorizing the countryside! To be fair, I don’t blame you for thinking that way since Maria looks like she’s straight out of the 80s, and so much good 80s music is awesome rock (it’s my favourite!)

Some nice finds! Shame about the broken game, but it looks like your S.O. was able to revive it. If you do end up getting GB MM5 I say hang onto it forever. Mega Man games never go any direction but up it seems. I went to a meet Saturday night, and found a couple of small pickups. It was fun though, got to see some folks I don’t get to see that often. Cheers!

I’m really blessed to have someone in my life that loves games as much as I do and has skills to fix them!

I will do my best to grab that Mega Man game next weekend if it’s still there. I’m trying not to think about it too much in fear of being consumed with a mix of rage and disappointment toward humankind. I’m horrible at Mega Man games, but I love the challenge of them. I’d really like to try out V.

Nice collections! it’s kind of hard to look for those kind of games now a days. Rare finds, my fave is megaman 3. I used to play it way back. Some I never heard of. Didn’t even know those games exist. Great article, post more!

It is cool to see some Game Gear games make it into your collection! I have that Sonic cart as well and it is fairly decent as best as I can remember as long as you know that it is not a port of the original Sonic from the Genesis and is a simpler version of the game. The Game Gear is such a funny console to me because I really wanted it as a kid after finding out it was backlit and had color graphics but once I got one after years of playing Game Boy, I barely played it. That thing is an absolute tank with the amount of batteries it takes to play too. I can’t imagine popping that many batteries in one device for a couple of hours of gameplay now but we did it back then 😀 Keep up the hunting and hopefully spring brings some great finds!

Thank you, thank you 🙂 I’m cracking open the libraries of lots of consoles I never dreamed of having myself, and it has been a lot of fun. I love Sonic games and I’m excited to try this one out! I had a Game Boy in my mid-teens and didn’t even know that the Game Gear was a thing really. My boyfriend had one and said he used to bring it on long car trips, but he said it ate batteries for breakfast! I’d like to find a way to stream or record these games at some point without emulating, but modding a Game Gear is hard to do and getting it done costs something like $400. Sooooo I’m not too sure what I’ll do about that yet!

That is great and I think you’ll enjoy playing Sonic on the Game Gear! I bought this crazy battery pack that is rechargeable for my Game Gear way back when. I’m not even joking when I say that it doubles the thickness of the system! It was unwieldy but saved a lot of batteries in my house. While dropping $400 to make the Game Gear streamable is tough, that would be pretty amazing to share part of your collection with others. I would think a lot of people can’t stream an actual Game Gear because of the cost as well so it might make your Youtube channel stand out too 🙂

It’s amazing that you have something that made the beastly Game Gear into something even larger! I’d like to see that thing in action! And I think eventually I’ll end up dropping the cash and buying a modded Game Gear. It’s too much fun to pass up on as far as I’m concerned, and would give me more reason to collect for the system. Thanks for the encouragement 😀

Haha, you’re welcome! 🙂 If you come across any Game Gear games that are fun to play, let me know and I’ll try to hunt them down!
My Game Gear is at the house I grew up in but when I go next time, I’ll grab it and take pictures. I’m pretty sure the battery was actually made by Sega so it isn’t some kind of crazy third party peripheral or anything like that.

I will definitely keep you posted on what I unearth! The most alluring one to me right now is Sylvan Tale, but I don’t think I could play that in English on the real deal, unfortunately.

I really hope you will take some photos! I’d love to see what you have there, and also see that behemoth of a battery 😀

I actually haven’t heard of that game but I can see there being some cool Japanese-exclusives for Game Gear because almost all Sega consoles have some.

I have been teasing pictures for a year now and I hate to say it, but I’m only marginally closer to being able to take pictures of it all. All I can say is sorry and thank you for your patience 😀
