Stranger Kindness

Happy New Year to everyone!  I hope that you all had a chance to enjoy yourselves on the last night of 2016 and are off to a great start to the year today.  I had a mild fever last night and feel like I got hit by a truck today, so I feel like things can only go up from here, right?  Right!

I’ve mentioned a few times since starting this blog that one of the awesome benefits of being a part of the broader gaming community has been meeting some wonderful people.  One of those wonderful people I met is a Twitter user who casually asked me one day if I wanted a game of hers she was looking to part with.  When I said I’d take it off her hands, she also told me that she wanted to get rid of some NES games, and after an exchange of information, I had a package in the mail on its way to me.  I was very touched by this person’s actions.  Not only has she been a wonderful support to myself and many others in the Twitterverse, she reached out to me and gave me a gift when she barely knows me at all.  It’s not something that has happened to me before or that I expect to ever happen again, but it was incredibly meaningful to me.

She sent me a few things, and the first was a pristine copy of Final Fantasy Legend for Game Boy.  I found a copy of Final Fantasy Legend III over the summer with a destroyed label and had been looking for the first and second parts of the series ever since with no luck.  The game looks flawless, like it has never even been put inside of a Game Boy!  I promised that after I get through my Sega Master System RPG run that I’d stream this game, so let’s hope I haven’t tired of RPGs by then (as if I could ever!)

She sent me four NES games in total as well, and the first three were Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt, Final Fantasy, and Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse.  I was very excited for this, especially for Final Fantasy and the Castlevania games!  When I was testing them out, there was nothing quite like popping in the FF cartridge and listening to the intro music on the real deal.  It was so fulfilling.  A long, long time ago, my most unfavourite cousin had a copy of FF, and when I was about 5 or 6 years old I used to ask him to let me play it with him.  He never did let me play and despite me asking many times to borrow the game, his entire collection sat in his parents’ house for many years untouched.  One day when I was in my early teens, I was out at a store called the Bi-Way with my mom, and the store occasionally sold used video games.  I saw Final Fantasy there and nearly screamed with excitement, but my mom refused to buy it for me despite my pleading.  I was pretty upset and sulky, so my mom had gone back a few days later to pick it up but it was gone.  Though Final Fantasy didn’t come home with her that day, I did get the most horrible consolation game ever: Mario is Missing.  I did own a copy of Final Fantasy for a time in my twenties, but I passed it along to a friend to play and never saw it again.  It is really nice to finally have a copy of this game again!

I’m also not particularly well-versed in Castlevania games.  I got my ass handed to me quite quickly by the first boss and then had to use a continue after accidentally falling off stairs into an abyss.  I am planning to practice this game a little more and maybe seek out the first game for the NES since I’ve got the second one hanging around somewhere.  They seem fun enough!

The last NES game I received was Dragon Warrior, and what was special about it was that it came with its box!  I have very few boxed NES games from my childhood since the boxes always just got in the way when I wanted to get out my cartridges.  If boxed games appear in my life at a decent price, I normally grab them even if I already have a loose copy of the game hanging around.  I picked up the instruction booklet pictured below from eBay and have also ordered a copy of the quest guide so I might finally be able to beat this one.  Before hitting university, I think I sunk 50+ hours into my friend’s copy of the game before her brother wanted it back, so this is another opportunity to relive something from my past.  Woohoo!

I can’t say enough how positive this experience was for me.  It really gave me something to look forward to over the holiday season, which isn’t always the easiest time of year for me.  I’m hoping some day that I’ll be able to repay her for her kindness, or pass it along somehow!

Thanks for reading, and happy 2017!

  1. That’s really nice to hear! There are some genuinely good people out there :-). Glad you finally managed to acquire a game you’ve wanted for so long too.

Thank you! I went through a phase a few years ago where I started watching video reviews of many of the better known RPGs on all systems and made a long, long list of ones I wanted to collect and play. The Final Fantasy Legend games were definitely in there, and it honestly shocked me how many games I had missed out on! It’s so exciting to have many of them at my fingertips now.

  2. Twitter is full of nice people, I’ve come to find out. Maybe we’re just following the right ones? That was so nice of them to hook you up with some really rad stuff! I *loved* Castlevania 3 growing up! It was the first game in the series that let you recruit additional characters and switch between them and the main protagonist at will. It was pretty tough, though. Castlevania 2 is more story-focused and open world, but the translation is really awful (I know we’ve talked about this at least twice already lol). It’s still my favorite though! The music is SO GOOD and the day/night cycle was terrifying as a child.

Mario is Missing is quite the consolation prize, haha. Woof.

I never got to play any of the three Final Fantasy Legends games on GB, so I look forward to watching you streaming them at some point!

I’m honestly convinced that I’ve hit the jackpot this past year when it comes to meeting great people. Never in my life have I felt so supported and encouraged by people, and it’s a wonderful change for me 🙂

I’m glad to hear you loved Castlevania 3! Every time I sit down to play a Castlevania game (I can count these times on one hand), I’m always overwhelmed because I don’t know the basics about what things do yet. I think it does sound pretty neat, and I’m looking forward to playing these games and getting better at them! It’s a shame I haven’t done so before now to be honest, but better late than never!

I’m also super excited for the Final Fantasy Legend games. I just need to track down the second one at some point and I’ll have all three! And just because you sounded so excited about my consolation prize, I might just have to stream that one of these days as well 😛

Happy 2017! Ouch. I hope you’re feeling much better now.

Everyone I’ve met on here and Twitter has been so nice. I’m glad you had such a positive experience! That is a true act of kindness.

Oh and that is the worst consolation prize ever… I remember how awful Mario Is Missing was *shudders*

    Happy New Year!
That’s what I love about the gaming community: you always hear about the negative side with people being rude on forums André such, but there’s also such kindness and friendliness! And you had a great experience with the latter!

Happy New Year! I hope you’re feeling better! Shame you started off the New Year like that, but I’m sure it’ll only get better from here! Your finds look amazing as always. I wish I could have played the original Dragon Warrior for NES back when Nintendo gave it away for free with its Nintendo Power magazines. So cool that you have the box too!

I am feeling much better now. I had lots of tea and water with some good homemade soup!

I feel like my life would’ve been so much different if I had had a Nintendo Power subscription in my youth. I missed out on so much! I found a few at the thrift store this summer and have read through some of them, and I’ve often imagined my younger self getting the latest and greatest tips for games I scratched my head over for so long! If we could only turn back time…

  6. Some of the nicest people I’ve met have been through the interwebs (case in point here and now ♥), and indeed a new but already dear friend sent me something that I’d been searching for for a while. I can commiserate with you about mean cousins 😦 When I was growing up, I loved watching people play video games, and I would do so without being too much of a bother, but sometimes just my presence was a bother so I was often ousted, unless the game was something that would terrify me then I’d be forced to stay. Like I said, sometimes the nicest of people are the ones you don’t expect to be, and the meanest ones are the ones who shouldn’t be at all.

Hopefully you feel better soon, or right now, I’m waaaaay behind with catching up on my blog subs :O

  7. After reading your post about the really rude person you had to deal with, it’s nice to read about someone being kind just for the sake of being kind! 🙂

It was honestly an amazing and moving experience for me. People are so cutthroat in the retro gaming scene, and it was so awesome to run into someone who was genuinely trying to do something nice without any expectations of payback! Thankfully I was able to trade something with her to repay her kindness!
